FairWind has signed its first long-term operation and maintenance contract with Statkraft, Europe’s largest renewable energy producer, to provide services at two onshore wind farms located in Tarifa, southern Spain.
The agreement will last for 2.5 years and represents a significant step forward for the company in the Mediterranean region. Furthermore, it constitutes the first project jointly developed by both companies within the Spanish wind energy market.
Specialized O&M for long-life wind turbines
As part of the contract, FairWind will assume responsibility for the preventive and corrective maintenance of the La Herrería and Pasada de Tejeda wind farms. The project encompasses a total of 34 Ecotecnia 1.6 MW wind turbines that have been in operation for over 20 years.
The services will be executed under the operational framework and asset management supervision of Statkraft. To ensure a rapid response to any incident, the company will have permanent technicians on site responsible for handling daily maintenance tasks and minor corrective interventions.
Likewise, the scope includes scheduled preventive activities and specialized support for more complex repairs when necessary.
A project that contributes to the supply of renewable energy
The facilities began operating in November 2004 and generate approximately 120.3 GWh of electricity per year. This production provides locally sourced renewable energy to about 34,500 homes.
The continued operation of these parks takes on special importance in a context where numerous first-generation wind assets continue to operate beyond the useful life initially planned by the manufacturers.
The need to extend the performance of existing turbines has increased the demand for specialized operation and maintenance services in mature wind markets such as Spain.
Demand for support for aging turbines is growing
According to Aitor Díaz de Lezana Fernández, FairWind’s regional director for the Mediterranean, the project represents a significant step forward for the company, both because of its multi-year nature and because it is the first collaboration with Statkraft.
The executive highlighted that many turbines installed during the early stages of wind energy expansion have now exceeded 20 or 25 years of operation. As a result, operators are increasingly seeking technical solutions capable of maximizing availability and extending the lifespan of these assets.
FairWind’s accumulated experience in maintaining legacy turbine fleets was one of the determining factors in winning the contract.
Growth strategy in the Mediterranean region
The agreement also reinforces FairWind’s expansion strategy in Southern Europe; the company has identified Italy, Greece, Romania, and Portugal as priority markets due to the sustained growth in demand for specialized services for operating wind farms.
Since January 2026, Aitor Díaz de Lezana Fernández has been leading regional development initiatives aimed at strengthening the company’s presence in Southern Europe and South Africa.
Founded in 2008, FairWind currently has more than 2,200 employees worldwide and offers installation, maintenance, training and comprehensive lifecycle management services for wind turbines for renewable energy projects in multiple international markets.
