As of July 24, 2026, the European Union will begin to apply New eco-design standards for industrial fans with the aim of improving its energy efficiency, extending its useful life and facilitating its repair.
The regulations raise the requirements for manufacturers
From July 24, the new requirements established by Regulation (EU) 2024/1834 for the industrial fans marketed in the European market. The update replaces the regulations in force since 2011 and responds to the need to reduce the electricity consumption of this equipment used in industrial processes and in heating, cooling and ventilation systems in buildings.
The measures affect fans driven by motors with an electrical power between 125 W and 500 kW, this range includes equipment primarily intended for industrial and commercial applications, distinguishing them from domestic fans, which continue to be regulated by specific requirements.
Greater energy efficiency and lower operating costs
The new requirements revise the minimum energy efficiency levels that manufacturers must meet to market their products within the European Union.
According to EU estimates, the application of the regulation will reduce the electricity consumption of industrial fans by around 31 TWh per year by 2030 compared to the scenario without eco-design measures. This volume of energy is roughly equivalent to the annual consumption of about ten million electric vehicles.
Likewise, compared to the previous regulations, the additional savings will reach 8 TWh per year by 2030 and could increase to 14 TWh per year in 2040, reinforcing the European strategy to improve energy efficiency in the industrial sector.
Repairability takes center stage
In addition to increasing efficiency, the regulations incorporate requirements designed to facilitate the repair and maintenance of equipment.
Manufacturers must guarantee the availability of spare parts within the established timeframes and facilitate access to the necessary technical information for professional repair technicians. These measures aim to extend the lifespan of fans and reduce premature equipment replacement.
Furthermore, the regulation requires providing more detailed information on fan performance, including partial load data. This information will allow engineers and designers to optimize the operation of ventilation systems and further reduce energy consumption through more efficient control strategies.
Benefits for European industry
The European Commission it estimates that the combination of more efficient equipment and greater durability will generate savings of approximately 4 billion euros annually by 2030 thanks to the reduction in electricity bills and the costs associated with replacing equipment.
With these measures, the European Union aims to promote the development of industrial fans with better energy performance, easier repair, and enhanced competitiveness for manufacturers who opt for high-performance solutions with a lower environmental impact.
