Enbridge has initiated a non-binding open season for its West Texas Express project, a new natural gas pipeline designed to connect the Waha area in the Permian Basin to El Paso and other markets in West Texas.
West Texas Express would span over 240 kilometers
According to available information, the project includes over 240 kilometers of new infrastructure and an initial transport capacity of up to 2 billion cubic feet of gas per day.
Furthermore, the system is designed to move gas from one of the main production hubs in the Permian Basin to consumers in West Texas. Potential markets also include Mexico, New Mexico, and Arizona.
Enbridge indicated that the project aims to meet the growing demand for gas supply from power plants, utilities, generators, and industrial consumers. Among the latter are data centers, whose energy demand is gaining prominence in the region.
Gas production increases in the Permian basin
Moreover, infrastructure expansion occurs at a time of increasing associated gas production in the Permian Basin. This region, located between West Texas and Eastern New Mexico, is the leading oil-producing shale basin in the United States.
Oil extraction also generates significant volumes of natural gas. According to data cited from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the ratio of gas to oil produced has steadily increased over the past five years.
The ratio reached an average of approximately 4,200 cubic feet of gas per barrel of oil, compared to about 3,600 cubic feet per barrel in 2021. This represents an increase of approximately 16%.
This growth increases the need for facilities capable of processing and transporting larger volumes of gas from producing areas to consumption centers.
