Thistle Wind Partners (TWP) has taken another step forward in the development of the Bowdun offshore wind farm by submitting its application for offshore operating authorization to the Scottish Government’s Marine Directorate. This marks a crucial stage for one of the most significant renewable energy projects currently underway in Scotland.
With a projected capacity of up to 1 GW, the Bowdun offshore wind farm was designed to supply clean electricity to more than 1.2 million homes. The application submitted is for the offshore component of the development and complements the onshore proposal previously submitted to Aberdeenshire Council in November 2025.
A strategic offshore project for the energy transition
Bowdun Park will use technology from offshore fixed foundation this is one of the most widely used solutions in large-scale offshore wind energy projects due to its stability and operational efficiency. According to TWP estimates, the construction of the park will generate more than 700 jobs for a period of approximately five years.
The Bowdun offshore wind farm has been designed to provide clean and reliable energy while boosting national economic value through skilled employment and a strong supply chain.

Northeast Scotland seeks to consolidate itself as an offshore hub
TWP also emphasized the strategic importance of northeast Scotland in the expansion of offshore wind energy. The company believes the region has the industrial and logistical capabilities to become a key hub for offshore operations.
The planned maintenance infrastructure for Bowdun could attract additional investment to the area and foster the development of technical skills related to the energy sector. The company also reiterated its intention to maintain collaboration with local communities, suppliers, and other stakeholders during the subsequent phases of the project.
ScotWind accelerates the development of offshore wind energy
Since its creation in 2022, Thistle Wind Partners has worked on several developments linked to the ScotWind program, an initiative launched to expand the capacity of renewable generation in Scottish waters.
The company has already submitted four major regulatory applications related to the Bowdun and Ayre projects, including onshore and offshore components.
This development reflects the growing dynamism of the offshore market in Scotland, where the Government and the energy industry are seeking to accelerate projects capable of strengthening energy security and reducing carbon emissions through renewable sources.
