Prodigy Clean Energy and Lloyd’s Register have teamed up to develop transportable nuclear power plants. Through a $2.75 million investment from the Government of Canada through Natural Resources Canada’s ( NRCan ) Small Modular Reactor ( SMR ) program, the collaboration aims to bring floating nuclear plants to Canadian shores by 2030.

Transportable nuclear power plants

Prodigy’s Transportable Nuclear Power Plants (TNPPs) are an innovative solution to the growing demand for nuclear energy. Unlike traditional nuclear power plants, these facilities are modularly built at sea, allowing for a faster and more efficient construction process. With the support of Lloyd’s Register, Prodigy seeks to develop models that allow the manufacturing, transport, and decommissioning of these plants without modifying the regulatory frameworks of the countries where they will be deployed.

This breakthrough has been made possible thanks to LR’s expertise in the maritime and nuclear industries, which will demonstrate how small modular reactors ( SMRs ) can be safely and cost-effectively deployed in coastal and remote regions. Industry experts note that this project could lay the groundwork for the creation of a global standard in floating and transportable nuclear power.

In the context of the growing global demand for clean energy and the need to reduce carbon emissions, Prodigy’s floating nuclear plants offer an effective solution. These plants can supply key industrial sectors such as data centers, low-carbon industries, hydrogen generation, and the decarbonization of power grids.

In addition, the project has an impact on the economic development of Indigenous communities in Canada, particularly in remote regions rich in critical minerals. Prodigy is also working in partnership with a multinational mining company to integrate its TNPP plants into these environments, which will provide a reliable and clean source of electricity and heat for up to 60 years.

As Prodigy and Lloyd’s Register move forward with this project, the future of transportable and floating nuclear plants is emerging as a key component of the transition to a world with greater reliance on clean and sustainable energy sources. The joint effort of both companies, along with the support of the Government of Canada, puts these plants on track to revolutionize the global offshore nuclear energy market.
