During the recent Executive Committee meeting of the International Dry Cargo Shipowners Association (INTERCARGO), members expressed concern over RightShip’s decision to lower the age limit for bulk carriers for assessment surveys . This move, announced without consultation with ship owners and operators, has raised concerns in the maritime sector.
Criticism over new rules on bulk carrier inspections
INTERCARGO, an organisation representing more than 250 dry bulk companies, stresses that while they support efforts to improve safety and operational quality, major changes such as this require the active participation of all stakeholders . An inclusive process, they say, would help shipping companies gradually adapt to the new demands.
The main concern is that lowering the age limit could add an additional burden to bulk carrier operators and seafarers , who already face significant operational challenges. For INTERCARGO, time is a crucial factor in implementing such measures, and they urge RightShip to reconsider the implementation deadline. The Association suggests that a delay would allow operators to comply with the new requirements without compromising efficiency and safety in cargo transport.
