Apple has presented its new mixed reality glasses, called Vision Pro, which combine augmented and virtual reality technologies.

The device was presented in the framework of the World Developers Conference 2023 (WWDC, for its acronym in English), which started this week on the campus of the American technology giant in Cupertino (California).

“It’s the first Apple product that you look through and not into,” Apple CEO Tim Cook described the new device. “Today marks the beginning of a new era for computing. Just as the Mac introduced us to personal computing and the iPhone to mobile computing, Apple Vision Pro introduces us to spatial computing,” he added.

The device, whose sale will start in the US Launching in early 2024 with a starting price of $3,499, it comes with an entirely new operating system, called visionOS, which features a three-dimensional interface.

The glasses, which can be controlled with eyes, hands or through messages to Siri, offer access to a variety of applications, including the camera, contacts, files, emails, messages, music, notes, photos, among others. “Users can navigate through applications simply by looking at them, clicking with their fingers to select them, moving their wrist to scroll or dictating with their voice,” they explain from Apple.

Connection to a Mac notebook is also available to expand a computer screen into virtual space. FaceTime in Vision Pro can display life-size people in video calls. The glasses also offer cinematic video viewing, extending the screen beyond the dimensions of a room, a feature that allows you to create “a personal movie theater.”

Among other features, the headset called EyeSight stands out, which will show the user’s eyes when in augmented reality mode and hide them when in virtual mode. Likewise, the device automatically detects if someone approaches the user in virtual reality mode and includes them in it.

“When a person approaches someone wearing Vision Pro, the device appears transparent, allowing the user to see the other individual and, at the same time, show their eyes,” the Cupertina company clarifies. In addition, they specify that when the user is immersed in an environment or an application, EyeSight gives visual clues to others so that they know what the one wearing Vision Pro is focused on.

On the other hand, Apple ensures that those who decide to purchase Vision Pro will be able to relive their memories, since each photo or video will transport them to the moment they select, such as a party with friends or a family reunion. Thus, users will access “their entire iCloud photo gallery” to see the images and recordings “at full scale with brilliant colors and spectacular details.” “Every panoramic shot on the iPhone expands and envelops the user, creating the sensation that they are right where it was taken,” they say from the technology giant.

Ahead of the introduction of Vision Pro and other products and technology news, Apple shares, which had started to rise before the event, took a dip, declining 1.15% as of 3:46 p.m. EDT.
