The company China Yuchai International Limited has unveiled its latest creation: a pure ammonia engine for heavy-duty commercial vehicles. This internal combustion power unit uses high-pressure direct injection and differs from previous hybrid projects by running exclusively on this chemical compound.
The technical innovation of the ammonia engine in pre-chamber fueling
Regarding the engine block’s internal operation, engineers at Guangxi Yuchai Machinery have managed to overcome the challenges of clean combustion. To achieve optimal performance, the mechanical architecture incorporates an advanced system that generates hydrogen from the ammonia itself at high pressures.
Subsequently, liquid ammonia is injected directly into the chamber via ignition controlled by pre-chamber injection. This highly sophisticated engineering ensures stable, consistent, and exceptionally clean combustion of a fuel that until recently was considered unviable for high power demands.
When reviewing the performance figures stated by the Asian corporation, one detail stands out that dispels the doubts of freight transport companies. The thermal efficiency achieved by this liquid-ammonia powertrain is on par with the most advanced high-power diesel engines on today’s market.
Indeed, this means that logistics operators will be able to maintain their usual towing capacity with highly competitive operating costs. Likewise, the environmental benefit is immediate, as it completely eliminates carbon emissions on long-haul journeys.
For his part, the president of the automotive entity, Weng Ming Hoh, has expressed great satisfaction with the commercial horizons opened by this patent. The executive maintains that the company’s R will remain focused on refining the applications of this alternative energy.
With this advancement, the manufacturer strengthens a portfolio that includes developments based on hydrogen, methanol, and electric fuel-cell systems. Immediate plans aim to consolidate national goals for decarbonizing industry and logistics transport.
