Trans Mountain Pipeline Prepares for New Capacity Expansion in Canada

Trans Mountain moves forward with new expansions to increase the transport of Canadian crude oil to international markets.

Trans Mountain Corp. is advancing its plans to increase the crude oil transport capacity of its main pipeline in Canada. According to information released by Bloomberg, the company will open a new bidding process to offer an additional 72,000 barrels per day to producers interested in securing transport capacity through long-term contracts.

Currently, the company is already working on an immediate expansion of 90,000 barrels per day through the use of drag-reducing agents, a technology that improves oil flow within existing infrastructure without the need to build new lines.

System Optimization Gains Prominence

Trans Mountain Corp. CEO Mark Maki explained that the company is developing various initiatives to maximize the infrastructure put into operation following the recent expansion of the TMX project.

The bidding process initiated in early April seeks to raise the proportion of committed capacity through long-term contracts from 80% to 90%, strengthening the commercial stability of the system.

Furthermore, the implementation of specialized chemicals will allow for an increase in the volume transported in a shorter timeframe than initially anticipated. The strategy is part of a broader program aimed at improving the operational performance of the pipeline connecting Alberta to the British Columbia coast.

A Project That Transformed Canadian Crude Oil Exports

The expansion of the Trans Mountain pipeline represented one of Canada’s most significant energy projects over the last decade. After years of regulatory delays and cost overruns, the project managed to triple the capacity of the original infrastructure.

Thanks to this expansion, the system went from transporting approximately 300,000 barrels per day to a capacity near 890,000 barrels per day, facilitating access for oil from the Alberta oil sands to international markets via the Canadian West Coast.

This increase has contributed to strengthening Canada’s position as a crude oil exporter in a context marked by geopolitical tensions and changes in global energy supply flows.

Trans Mountain Projects Additional Growth Toward 2029

Expansion plans may not stop with the improvements currently underway. Mark Maki previously indicated that the pipeline could reach a total capacity near 1.2 million barrels per day by 2029.

The company is also considering a broader optimization project that would add approximately 210,000 additional barrels per day. According to the most recent schedule, this initiative would be completed by the end of 2028, moving up initial forecasts by several years.

Likewise, the growth in transport capacity responds to expectations of sustained demand for energy infrastructure capable of moving larger volumes of Canadian oil to international markets.

The Market Observes the Impact of New Capacity

The continuous expansion of the Trans Mountain pipeline occurs at a time when Alberta producers are seeking greater export options and access to destinations other than the U.S. market.

With new bidding rounds and optimization projects in development, Canadian energy infrastructure continues to evolve to meet long-term crude oil transport needs and improve the competitiveness of the country’s oil sector.
