TMC Compressors announced the award of a contract to supply complete marine compressed air systems to two new subsea rock installation vessels being built by the Yantai CIMC Raffles Offshore Ltd shipyard for the Dutch company Van Oord, a specialist in maritime infrastructure and offshore energy.

As part of the agreement, TMC will provide instrument air compressors and air dryers for both vessels, designed to support protection and stabilization operations for subsea infrastructure linked to marine energy projects.

Although the company did not disclose the economic value of the contract, it highlighted the technological relevance of these vessels for the future of the offshore industry.

Vessels designed for large-scale energy projects

The new vessels will be equipped with a cargo capacity of up to 35,000 tons and will be able to handle large rocks intended for the protection of subsea cables, pipelines, and energy infrastructure located on the seabed.

Furthermore, they will incorporate a DP-2 dynamic positioning system, a technology that allows the vessel’s position to be precisely maintained even under adverse wave, wind, and current conditions.

According to Hans-Petter Tanum, Director of Sales and Business Development at TMC, the company believes these vessels can play a significant role in advancing the energy transition.

Technology oriented toward efficiency and emission reduction

One of the most prominent aspects of the design is its focus on operational sustainability. The vessels will be equipped with multi-fuel engines capable of operating on biofuels and methanol, in addition to a direct current (DC) power grid supported by large-capacity battery energy storage systems.

The design also features an energy-optimized hull and advanced rock-handling systems, which will reduce fuel consumption and minimize emissions during operations.

Thanks to their large cargo capacity, the vessels will be able to complete long-distance projects with fewer trips between ports and work areas, contributing to lower operational costs and a reduced environmental footprint.

Van Oord strengthens its fleet for the offshore market

Van Oord has over 155 years of experience as an international maritime contractor and operates a fleet consisting of 61 specialized vessels.

The company is considered a pioneer in the subsea rock installation technique, used since the 1970s to protect critical infrastructure on the seabed.

With the addition of these new vessels, the company seeks to bolster its capacity to meet the growing demand for offshore energy projects, particularly in sectors such as offshore wind energy and the development of subsea infrastructure for the energy transition.
