A $300,000 prize to promote geothermal exploration

He United States Department of Energy (DOE) announced a $300,000 competition aimed at improving the identification of hidden geothermal systems through the analysis of geophysical data.

The initiative, called Geologic Enhanced Mapping System (GEMS) Prize it is aimed at participants capable of developing models and algorithms that allow the identification of faults and other geological structures related to potential geothermal resources.

With this proposal, the Office of Hydrocarbons and Geothermal Energy (HGEO) it seeks to expand the tools available to explore resources that remain hidden beneath the surface and that, in many cases, are difficult to detect using conventional methods.

Algorithms for locating hidden geothermal systems

During the competition, participants will have to develop, train, and test algorithms capable of generating improved datasets on geological faults.

These results can be used to support the mapping and modeling of critical geothermal and mineral resources. To do this, the teams will work with real-world datasets and various sources of geophysical information.

According to the DOE these tools could accelerate the discovery of hidden geothermal systems with commercial potential and, at the same time, reduce the risks associated with the exploration and development stages.

Furthermore, the initiative combines geological analysis with computational tools capable of processing large volumes of subsurface information and improving the identification of areas with potential for new projects.

Geothermal energy for continuous electricity generation

The program is part of the U.S. administration’s efforts to expand the use of its domestic energy resources, the DOE links geothermal development to the possibility of having a reliable and dispatchable electricity supply 24 hours a day.

Curt Coccodrilli, acting assistant secretary of the Bureau of Hydrocarbons and Geothermal Energy, noted that harnessing the country’s geothermal potential is an important element in strengthening the United States’ energy leadership.

The office also believes that greater availability of geothermal generation it can contribute to the stability of the electrical grid and help meet a constant demand for electricity.

In particular, the statement mentions among the potential beneficiaries domestic manufacturing and next-generation artificial intelligence data centers, facilities that require a stable and continuous energy supply.

Two rounds and prizes of up to $100,000

He GEMS Prize it will be divided into two rounds, and individual prizes will range from $15,000 to $100,000, according to the conditions set for the competition.

The call is open to both individuals and groups interested in developing solutions that will improve geological and geophysical mapping related to geothermal resources.
