SLB technological expansion opens a new chapter with the agreement to acquire Kelvion for USD 3.4 billion in cash. The transaction will allow the company to add thermal management capabilities and expand its presence in data center infrastructure, a market growing rapidly amid the global deployment of artificial intelligence.

The transaction also reflects an increasing convergence between energy and technology. The operation of high-capacity digital facilities depends not only on processors and software: it requires reliable power supply, efficient cooling, and industrial systems capable of managing high thermal loads.

SLB technological expansion adds thermal capabilities

The acquisition of Kelvion will add new thermal management solutions to the SLB portfolio. In addition to the amount agreed for the purchase, the company will assume approximately USD 700 million in debt, while the transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2027.

Kelvion develops technologies for heat exchange and thermal control, capabilities that are becoming particularly important as computing density increases. Servers used to run advanced applications generate large amounts of heat that must be continuously removed to maintain reliable operating conditions.

SLB estimates that adding these technologies could more than double its revenue opportunity for each gigawatt of capacity delivered. Cooling is therefore becoming a strategic component within an infrastructure where energy, processing, and temperature control must operate in an integrated manner.

SLB projects up to USD 5 billion in revenue

Financial expectations provide an indication of the importance the company places on this new market. SLB projects that its combined digital infrastructure solutions business could generate between USD 4.5 billion and USD 5 billion in revenue in 2028.

For the same period, adjusted EBITDA could reach between USD 700 million and USD 800 million. Data center-related applications currently represent the largest and fastest-growing end market for Kelvion.

These projections show that the transaction goes beyond adding a new manufacturer to the portfolio. SLB aims to combine industrial solutions, energy supply, and thermal control within a business whose expansion is being driven by increasing computing requirements.

Energy and cooling converge in digital infrastructure

The transaction is not an isolated move. SLB has already been developing capabilities around this market. One example is the alliance between SLB and Liberty Energy to supply power to AI infrastructure, based on modular solutions and distributed generation.

This is complemented by the SLB collaboration with Nvidia to develop a platform designed to apply artificial intelligence to large volumes of operational data from the energy sector.

This convergence responds to a fundamental characteristic of large-scale computing facilities: they must simultaneously address processing capacity, energy availability, and efficient heat removal. A limitation in any of these elements can affect the performance and growth of the entire system.

The trend can also be observed from another perspective in the growing Nvidia investment in energy infrastructure, a sign that energy availability is taking on an increasingly important role in the development of new digital capabilities.

SLB brings industrial expertise into new markets

Entering this segment allows SLB to transfer knowledge developed over decades around complex energy systems into applications that require reliability, availability, and efficient management of large loads.

At the same time, this diversification is taking place as artificial intelligence is also transforming upstream operations through new applications related to production, drilling, reservoir management, and automation.

The acquisition of Kelvion now adds thermal management to that evolution. If the transaction is completed within the expected timeframe, SLB will have a broader combination of technologies to participate in a digital infrastructure market whose growth is closely linked to energy availability.

Physical infrastructure gains prominence with AI

The growth of artificial intelligence is demonstrating that digital evolution does not depend exclusively on semiconductors, computational models, or software. Behind these technologies lies physical infrastructure that must receive electricity, dissipate heat, and maintain high levels of availability during continuous operations.

For SLB, this transformation opens a diversification opportunity in which capabilities originating from the energy sector can be applied to new industrial markets. SLB technological expansion through Kelvion represents, in this sense, a move toward the intersection of energy, thermal management, and digital infrastructure.
