The company RWE has signed this new fifteen-year contract, guaranteeing the flow of 70 annual gigawatt-hours of clean electricity to Breedon Group. This energy will be directly supplied to Breedon’s plants, enabling cement, asphalt, and concrete production to reduce its carbon footprint.
The supply of 70 GWh of wind energy per year
The origin of the supplied power will undergo a planned transition in two distinct geographical phases. Initially, the supply will come from the Gwynt y Môr offshore wind farm, located off the coast of North Wales.
From 2033, the electrical load will shift to the Brechfa Forest West onshore complex. This asset diversification ensures stability in the volume of energy fed into the grid for industrial consumption. Likewise, the strategy allows Breedon to hedge against wholesale market price volatility while meeting its sustainability goals.
The decarbonization of essential materials is a complex activity that requires large-scale solutions. Through this contract, Breedon directly addresses its Scope 2 emissions derived from electricity consumption.
The objective is to achieve a 23.3% reduction in its absolute emissions by the end of this decade. Olaf Lubenow, Head of Commodity Solutions at RWE, mentioned that this collaboration enhances the energy company’s commitment to the transition of critical industrial sectors.
Donna Hunt, Director at Breedon, shares a sustainability vision that aligns with the need for transparent investments in ESG criteria. The company aims for total climate neutrality by 2050, supported by carbon capture and intensive use of renewables.
