RWE has started construction of the Serra Giannina onshore wind farm in the Italian region of Basilicata, a project that will add 42 megawatts (MW) of renewable capacity to the country’s energy system from 2027.
Located in the municipality of Potenza, the complex will have six wind turbines of seven MW each, the installation will have the capacity to generate enough electricity to supply around 39,000 Italian homes, thus strengthening the production of clean energy in southern Italy.
The project was awarded during the FER-X auction held in 2025, one of the mechanisms promoted by the Italian government to accelerate the incorporation of renewable energies and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
RWE expands its wind energy presence in Italy
In addition to Serra Giannina, the German company is simultaneously developing three other onshore wind farms in Italy. These include Serra Palino, with a capacity of 47 MW in Apulia; Venusia, with a capacity of 45 MW in Basilicata; and Alas, with a capacity of 66 MW in Sardinia.
With these initiatives, RWE currently has 200 MW of onshore wind capacity under construction in Italy, reinforcing its expansion strategy within the European renewable energy market.
Sopna Sury, CEO of RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, noted that onshore wind power remains one of the most cost-competitive sources of generation and a key piece in developing a more resilient energy system.
Italy accelerates the transition to renewable energy
Italy continues to increase its investments in renewable infrastructure to meet its decarbonization and energy security goals. In this context, onshore wind energy maintains a significant role thanks to its shorter development times and the increasing efficiency of new-generation wind turbines.
Likewise, the development of Serra Giannina reflects the interest of large energy companies in expanding their presence in strategic regions such as Basilicata and Sardinia, where there are favorable conditions for wind power generation projects.
RWE currently operates 17 onshore wind farms and one solar power plant in Italy, with a combined installed capacity of 589 MW. According to the company, this infrastructure allows it to supply renewable electricity to more than 500,000 Italian households.
The company also has several solar projects under construction in different regions of the country as part of its integrated strategy for the development, operation and marketing of renewable assets.
