The recent fire at the Geelong refinery, operated by Viva Energy in Australia, has tested the resilience of the country’s energy system. Although the incident caused initial concern, the company confirmed that most vital units remain operational and that fuel supply will not be affected.

Fire control and immediate response

The fire originated in the alkylation unit, part of the gasoline complex, during Wednesday night. Thanks to the rapid intervention of internal emergency teams along with Victoria State firefighters, the fire was controlled and completely extinguished the following day.

Furthermore, Viva Energy confirmed that no injuries were reported, reinforcing the effectiveness of the industrial safety protocols implemented at the facility.

Impact on fuel production

Following the incident, the refinery maintains significant operational levels; currently, diesel and aviation fuel production reaches nearly 80% of capacity, while gasoline stands at around 60%.

The company ensured it has sufficient reserves to sustain normal supply in the Australian market. This reduces the risk of disruptions at service stations or in critical sectors such as transport and aviation.

Progressive capacity recovery

According to company forecasts, production could exceed 90% in the coming weeks, once technical inspections are finalized and operational safety is guaranteed.

This recovery process is essential considering that the Geelong refinery represents strategic infrastructure for Australia, with a significant contribution to regional fuel supply.

Investigation and energy security

Viva Energy CEO Scott Wyatt confirmed that a thorough investigation will be conducted to determine the causes of the fire. The company aims to identify the origin of the incident and strengthen its operational prevention mechanisms.

On the other hand, the incident has reignited the debate on energy security in Australia, especially in a context where local refining capacity is limited and depends on critical infrastructure like Geelong.

Strategic role of Viva Energy

With more than 120 years of history, Viva Energy stands as one of the main players in Australia’s fuel supply. The company operates an extensive network of service stations and maintains a presence in sectors such as aviation, marine transport, and chemicals.

The Geelong refinery, in particular, plays an essential role in the production of gasoline, diesel, and other derivatives, making it a fundamental asset within the national energy system.
