Petrobras and Ecopetrol they confirmed a new natural gas discovery after drilling in exploratory well Watermelon-1, located in Block UA-OFF-0 in deep waters of the Colombian Caribbean. The result strengthens the gas potential of this region and supports expectations of increasing gas supply for Colombia in the coming years.
Petrobras and Ecopetrol increase the gas potential of the Caribbean
The well is located approximately at 42 kilometers from the coast, in a water depth of 1,285 meters frurthermore, it is located at 18 kilometers from the Sirius-1 and Sirius-2 wells already 9 kilometers from the Copoazú-1 well, three discoveries that have helped to reinforce a new area of interest for offshore exploration.
The proximity of these findings increases the prospects of developing gas resources capable of contributing to the energy security of Colombia and the region.
Drilling was completed at the end of July
Drilling at Sandía-1 began on June 12, 2026 and reached its final depth July 29, complying with the operational and environmental standards established for this type of project.
Currently, the intervals where the presence of natural gas has been confirmed are undergoing detailed evaluation using well logs. Laboratory analyses will also be conducted to more precisely determine the characteristics of the discovery and its commercial potential.
Project developed in partnership
The discovery belongs to GUA-OFF-0 Contract, signed with the National Hydrocarbons Agency (ANH), Petrobras International Braspetro B.V. – Colombia Branch acts as the block operator with a participation of 44,4 % while Ecopetrol owns the 55,6 % remaining.
This cooperation scheme is part of both companies’ strategy to advance the exploration of new areas with high hydrocarbon potential.
A new boost for gas supply
For Petrobras, the project aligns with its long-term strategy focused on incorporating new oil and gas reserves through the exploration of new frontiers and the development of international partnerships, with the aim of contributing to energy supply during the energy transition.
For their part, Ecopetrol the company stated that this new discovery confirms the gas potential of the Colombian Caribbean and supports the results obtained during the offshore exploration campaign. The company believes these advances strengthen the possibility of increasing the availability of natural gas to meet national demand in the coming years.
