Norsepower opens first rotor sail factory in China, a key step towards sustainability in global shipping.

Norsepower, the Finnish pioneer in wind-assisted propulsion , has opened its first dedicated rotor sail production factory in Dafeng, China. This development underlines Norsepower’s leadership in the wind propulsion sector and its ability to deliver sustainable solutions that improve the efficiency of global shipping.

The new facility, strategically located close to China’s major shipping routes and shipyards, aims to produce 50 rotor sails annually in its initial phase , with plans to increase this figure to 100 units by 2027. This increase in production capacity responds to the growing demand for green technologies that allow vessels to reduce their fuel consumption and minimise CO₂ emissions.

Norsepower has pioneered rotor sail technology, a system that harnesses wind to assist in the propulsion of ships. This concept, based on the Flettner rotor , has been modernised by Norsepower to create an efficient and adaptable solution to the needs of modern shipping .

Heikki Pöntynen, CEO of Norsepower, stressed that this new plant strengthens the company’s production capacity and also reinforces its position as a global leader in wind propulsion for the maritime industry.
