Midwest Aerospace has announced the opening of a new maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) shop for rotor blades at its Lowell, Indiana headquarters. The 20,000-square-foot facility will mark a very significant structural advancement in the company’s ability to offer high-quality products with faster delivery times and more competitive prices.

This expansion responds to a growing demand for quality rotor blades and more efficient turnaround times, as highlighted by the company’s Vice President, Joseph L. Giannini.

Specialized Workshop for Bell and Sikorsky Helicopters

The shop officially opened its doors on May 1, offering a range of services such as non-destructive testing, comprehensive maintenance and overhaul, and X-ray inspections for various helicopter models.

Among the equipment that will benefit from these services are Bell helicopters and the Sikorsky Black Hawk, as well as the Airbus H125. With the new facility, Midwest Aerospace seeks to consolidate its position as a comprehensive provider of Bell products, also capturing overflow traffic from other maintenance providers.

Job Creation and Capacity Expansion

To operate the new shop, Midwest Aerospace will hire 10 new technicians with over 100 years of combined industry experience, further strengthening its ability to manage growing demand.

The company already has a presence in other states such as Tucson, Gilbert, and Naples, and the Lowell shop will complement the maintenance operations for Bell and Sikorsky brand helicopter engines and components.

Innovation in Erosion Protection

One of the most innovative aspects of the new facility will be its capability to install the Dragon Skin Extreme (DSX) erosion protective coating.

This coating, exclusive to Rotorcraft Repair and Manufacturing, will help prevent corrosion issues on the leading edges of rotor blades.

Additionally, the facility will offer repair kits, allowing customers to replenish the coating if it sustains damage during use, such as hitting a rock.

Long-Term Growth Strategy

The opening of this new facility is part of Midwest Aerospace’s long-term strategy to become a leading provider in the rotor blade maintenance sector.

The company has also formed a partnership with Rotorcraft Repair and Manufacturing to increase production capacity and improve the efficiency of its operations.

Giannini expressed his enthusiasm, noting that this new shop will not only contribute to improving service quality but will also allow the company to internally manage over 100 blades annually, resulting in significant economic benefit.
