Masdar reinforced its presence in the European energy market after reaching strategic agreements with RWE and Luxcara to study new investments in offshore wind energy and battery storage systems in Germany and other European markets.
The agreements were reached during the state visit to Germany by the President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The initiatives seek to expand energy cooperation between the UAE and Germany through long-term capital and renewable infrastructure.
In this way, the Abu Dhabi clean energy company deepens a European strategy that combines renewable generation and electricity storage. This latter component gains greater relevance as the share of variable sources within power grids increases.
Masdar and RWE study investments exceeding €3 billion
Masdar and RWE signed a Memorandum of Understanding to analyze joint participation in future offshore wind auctions in Germany.
The agreement contemplates an indicative investment value exceeding €3 billion and opens the possibility for both companies to participate jointly in the German wind auctions scheduled for 2027.
Thus, the companies seek to transfer the experience accumulated over years of cooperation in European offshore projects to the German market.
RWE and Masdar are already working together on offshore wind projects in the United Kingdom with a combined capacity of 3.6 GW. Their relationship includes London Array, operational since 2013, and the Dogger Bank South projects.
Furthermore, offshore wind is set to occupy a significant position within the German power system due to its capacity to produce renewable electricity on a large scale and contribute to energy security.
Luxcara and Masdar focus on offshore wind and batteries
In parallel, Masdar signed another Memorandum of Understanding with Luxcara to establish a strategic partnership oriented toward the energy transition in Germany and Europe.
The companies will study potential joint investments in battery energy storage systems (BESS) and offshore wind projects. The agreement also leaves open the possibility of evaluating other energy technologies.
According to information provided by Masdar, the opportunities linked to this partnership could represent potential investments exceeding €5 billion.
Battery storage would complement the expansion of renewable generation by allowing for more flexible management of available electricity. In this way, BESS systems can store energy and deliver it when grid conditions require.
Baltic Eagle supports Masdar’s expansion in Germany
Additionally, Masdar already has direct experience in the German offshore wind sector through Baltic Eagle, a 476 MW wind farm that entered full operation last year.
This facility is part of a European portfolio that also includes London Array, Dudgeon, Hywind Scotland, and East Anglia THREE.
The presence of Baltic Eagle provides Masdar with an operational base to evaluate new opportunities in Germany while deepening its partnerships with European energy infrastructure developers and managers.
Likewise, the company has extended its investments in recent years to markets such as the United Kingdom, Spain, Portugal, and various countries in Central and Southeastern Europe.
Masdar consolidates a 15.6 GW European platform
Currently, Masdar indicates that its European platform exceeds 15.6 GW and that its cumulative investments in Europe surpass 13 billion dollars.
The new agreements with RWE and Luxcara expand that strategy by combining two increasingly connected segments: offshore wind generation and energy storage.
For Germany, this combination can facilitate the integration of greater renewable capacity and provide flexibility to the power system. For Masdar, it represents another avenue to expand its European portfolio through long-term investments and partnerships with established operators.
The company also maintains its global goal of reaching 100 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. In this scenario, Germany emerges as one of the markets where Masdar seeks to expand its participation through new offshore wind projects and energy storage.
