Karpowership to Deploy New Floating Natural Gas Power Plant in Mexico

The three-year project with CENACE will provide 250 MW of dispatchable electrical capacity through an integrated liquefied natural gas model.

The transnational company Karpowership formalized a three-year agreement with Mexico’s National Energy Control Center (CENACE). Through this collaboration, the aim is to strengthen the electrical supply in the Yucatán Peninsula, one of the areas of greatest economic expansion in Mexican territory.

Deployment of the Floating Natural Gas Power Plant in the Yucatán Peninsula

The infrastructure designated for this purpose includes the deployment of a floating power plant with a capacity to generate 250 MW, complemented by a liquefied natural gas storage and regasification terminal vessel.

Regarding operational viability, this integrated fuel-to-electricity conversion system enables the supply of dispatchable energy with a lower carbon footprint compared to hydrocarbons. According to the logistical plans outlined by the corporation, both vessels are expected to arrive at Mexican coasts in the coming weeks to begin commercial operations in coordination with federal and state authorities.

Due to population growth and intense heat waves recorded, the peninsular electrical system has experienced constant pressure on its distribution networks. According to projections from the National Electric System Development Program (PRODESEN) 2024-2038, the Yucatán Peninsula will register the highest growth in electrical demand nationwide, with an estimated rate of 3.8% annually. Consequently, the immediate availability of this floating infrastructure will provide operational resilience during consumption peaks and mitigate potential service interruptions.

Additionally, the modular model adopted by the company offers advantages over conventional land-based thermal power plants, as it reduces installation times from years to months and decreases the construction environmental footprint.

Likewise, the firm assured that the project development will strictly comply with local environmental regulatory frameworks of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) and the Safety, Energy and Environment Agency (ASEA), in addition to international maritime regulations.

Furthermore, the start of operations in the Mexican market consolidates the corporation’s presence in the American continent, where it already maintains assets and operations in Brazil, Ecuador, Guyana, the Dominican Republic, and a recently acquired shipyard in Brownsville, Texas.

According to statements by Zeynep Harezi Yılmaz, Chief Commercial Officer of Karpowership, Mexican territory represents a strategic axis for the organization’s long-term positioning, which seeks to provide reliable capacity to industrial and civil communities during critical moments of energy demand.
