JAPEX Completes Natural Gas Exploratory Drilling in Hokkaido

The petroleum firm rules out immediate commercial exploitation after evaluating the volume of resources detected off the coast of Hidaka.

The Japan Petroleum Exploration (JAPEX) corporation officially announced the completion of its exploratory drilling activities in the Hidaka maritime region, located in Hokkaido. This operational campaign began on March 24, 2026, with the defined purpose of confirming the existence of natural gas reserves in the eastern deep waters of the Japanese archipelago. For the execution of this highly complex technical project, the organization utilized the Valaris 8504 offshore platform, successfully completing the planned tasks on June 10, 2026.

The natural gas exploratory drilling project

Regarding the technical background, the current work was based on previous surveys conducted in the same area during 2019. The new location was established five kilometers northwest of the previous well, approximately 50 kilometers from the coastline. Subsea operations reached a total operational depth of 1,900 meters below sea level, operating on a seabed established at 1,070 meters of water depth.

Furthermore, the energy initiative received financial and strategic support from the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, under Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. This state agency selected the activity as part of a subsidy program focused on geological studies for local hydrocarbon development. Additionally, the technical deployment was materialized through the comprehensive coordination of regional government sectors and representatives of the Hidaka fishing industry.

Evaluation of Geological Data and Commercial Viability

Indeed, preliminary analyses confirmed indications and the effective presence of natural gas in specific sections of the evaluated field. Despite the positive discovery, the company’s engineers determined that the estimated volume of natural gas does not meet corporate requirements to authorize immediate commercialization in the short term. Nevertheless, the technical team will retain the samples and collected information for exhaustive analyses to reconsider future structural development opportunities in the coastal area.
