Jackdaw Project it enters a new regulatory phase after the public consultation period ended on August 10. Now, the development of North Sea gas is pending review of the responses received before a ministerial decision is reached.
Thus, the Offshore Petroleum Regulator for Environment and Decommissioning (OPRED) the comments submitted during the consultation will be analyzed. After this evaluation is completed, the project can move forward to a decision by the British Government regarding its approval.
Jackdaw Project enters a crucial regulatory phase
Jackdaw is part of the energy projects that Prayer promoted in the North Sea the company also develops Rosebank, an oil and gas project located west of the Shetland Islands that is going through its own consultation process.
According to Adura, both developments represent a planned joint investment of 10.8 billion pounds sterling the company also estimates that Jackdaw and Rosebank could generate £28.7 billion of gross value added during their productive lives.
Furthermore, both projects are linked to the maintenance of thousands of specialized jobs and apprenticeship programs. Adura argues that their development would allow for an increase in the contribution of domestic resources to the UK energy supply.
Adura highlights the role of gas in energy security
Adura’s CEO, Neil McCulloch, thanked the citizens, companies and organizations for their participation in the Jackdaw consultation process.
Jackdaw and Rosebank are advanced projects of national importance, McCulloch noted, according to the executive, both can strengthen British energy security and preserve high-quality jobs, as well as support companies linked to the energy supply chain.
Adura also maintains that these developments could generate billions of pounds in economic activity and tax revenue. The company further argues that the associated production would have lower carbon emissions than certain supply alternatives such as imported liquefied natural gas.
OPRED will review the responses before the ministerial decision
With the consultation finished, attention now shifts to OPRED the regulator will have to study the responses received before a ministerial decision is made on the future of the Jackdaw project.
This process keeps the project within a crucial regulatory stage for its potential advancement in the North Sea, Adura indicated that he will continue working with OPRED and the UK Government while the assessment is completed.
Meanwhile, Rosebank it follows a different schedule; its public consultation will remain open until August 17, 2026 therefore, Adura’s two major projects continue to progress in parallel through the British regulatory framework.
Jackdaw keeps the focus on the North Sea
The future of Jackdaw is also linked to the debate on the role of domestic oil and gas production in the UK. Business organizations have called on the Government to reduce the uncertainty surrounding North Sea projects and allow developments like Jackdaw to move forward.
For now, the closing of the consultation does not imply automatic approval of the project; the next step will depend on OPRED’s evaluation and the subsequent ministerial decision that will determine whether Jackdaw can continue its development.
