Gasrec and FreshLinc have submitted a planning application for a new public Bio-LNG station next to FreshLinc’s headquarters in Spalding, UK.
The facility will be built and delivered by Gasrec, with an anticipated opening towards the end of 2026. The project will become the first public Bio-LNG refueling station in East Anglia, expanding the national renewable gas infrastructure for heavy transport.
First Public Station in East Anglia
The new plant will strengthen strategic biomethane coverage in Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, and Suffolk, regions essential for regional and long-distance logistics operations.
Gasrec indicated that the demand for biomethane continues to grow and that the Spalding site is part of its plan to build a robust national network of refueling facilities, making it easier for more operators to move away from diesel.
The hub will be open to the public from the outset, allowing fleets of various sizes to access cleaner and more competitive fuel.
Capacity for 100 Trucks Daily
The immediate plan involves installing a mobile unit supplied by tankers, with the capacity to refuel up to 100 gas-powered trucks per day.
Subsequently, Gasrec and FreshLinc plan to move towards a larger, permanent station. This transition will allow for rapid service launch while the definitive infrastructure is developed.
The facility will support both FreshLinc and other operators looking to incorporate gas-powered trucks into their heavy transport routes.
FreshLinc to Decarbonize its Fleet
FreshLinc operates a fleet of approximately 400 commercial vehicles and has been evaluating alternatives to reduce the environmental impact of its operations.
The company believes that biomethane is currently the best option to begin the transition to alternative fuels. After testing with Volvo gas-powered trucks, FreshLinc plans to incorporate its first gas vehicles this year.
Lee Juniper, FreshLinc’s Executive Director, highlighted that the performance and refueling of gas-powered trucks were similar to those of diesel, while biomethane allows for immediate emissions reduction.
Gasrec Expands its National Network
Gasrec currently operates 18 biomethane plants in the UK, with over 99% availability across its network.
All facilities are supported by the company’s Remote Monitoring Centre in Daventry and a national fleet of engineers offering 24-hour operational assistance.
With the new station in Spalding, Gasrec will expand its presence in an area that previously lacked this type of public infrastructure, strengthening the deployment of Bio-LNG as an alternative for heavy transport.
