Equinor Grows in Northern Norway After 50 Years

Equinor Strengthens Production, Exploration, and Subsea Developments in Northern Norway After Five Decades of Operation.

Equinor reinforces its commitment to Northern Norway after five decades of operations in a region that already contributes nearly 35% of its own production on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. The company produces more than half a million barrels of oil equivalent per day there and believes the area will continue to gain importance in its exploration plans, subsea development, and energy supply for Europe.

The story began in 1976, when Statoil opened its first office outside Stavanger in Harstad. That move marked the beginning of an industrial presence that today extends across Nordland, Troms, and Finnmark with over 1,200 employees. From this base, Equinor operates strategic assets in the Norwegian Sea and the Barents Sea.

Harstad Consolidates Equinor’s Operational Hub

Currently, the Harstad office coordinates fields such as Norne and Aasta Hansteen in the Norwegian Sea. It also manages operations linked to Snøhvit and Johan Castberg in the Barents Sea. In the case of Snøhvit, gas is processed as LNG at Melkøya, near Hammerfest, a key facility for the Norwegian energy supply chain.

For Equinor, this regional presence combines mature production, available infrastructure, and new development opportunities. The company maintains that there are still untapped oil and gas resources in both the Norwegian Sea and the Barents Sea, and will therefore continue exploratory activity in both areas.

Johan Castberg Focuses on New Subsea Developments

The Johan Castberg field is emerging as one of Equinor’s most significant growth centers in Northern Norway. The company has already begun the development of Isflak, the first subsea field to be connected to this infrastructure. It has also advanced with Drivis Tubåen, which has an investment decision and will be integrated into the existing Johan Castberg system.

Additionally, the discovery of Polynya reinforces the strategy of leveraging installed infrastructure to add resources with less operational complexity. The company plans to drill one to two exploration wells per year in the Johan Castberg area with the aim of extending the field’s high-production phase.

Initially, Johan Castberg’s resources were estimated at between 500 and 700 million barrels of oil. With new exploration campaigns and connected developments, Equinor aims to add an additional 200 to 500 million barrels to that base.

Local Suppliers Increase Industrial Participation

Equinor’s growth in Northern Norway is also reflected in the supplier chain. Regional companies participate in maintenance, modifications, projects, and operations in both onshore and offshore facilities.

According to the Levert report, the value of deliveries from Northern Norwegian suppliers increased from 2.6 billion Norwegian kroner in 2023 to an estimated 4 billion Norwegian kroner in 2025. This increase shows greater integration of local industry into Equinor’s energy projects.

The company’s CEO, Anders Opedal, highlighted that operations have generated skilled jobs, robust professional environments, and value for the region. In his view, Northern Norway will continue to be a growth platform for the company and for the Norwegian energy sector.

Energy Security and Future Exploration

The relevance of Northern Norway extends beyond the corporate anniversary. By concentrating a considerable portion of Equinor’s production on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, the region maintains an important role in supplying oil, gas, and LNG to European markets.

Looking ahead to the coming decades, the strategy combines three fronts: maximizing existing fields, connecting new subsea developments, and continuing offshore exploration. With this approach, Equinor seeks to sustain production in an area that has evolved from a regional venture to one of its main energy drivers.
