Italian energy company Eni signed an Oil Exploration, Development and Production License Agreement for the offshore Block A1 in The Gambia, marking its official entry into the country’s oil and gas sector and expanding its presence in one of the most active exploration regions along the Atlantic margin.

The agreement was signed with the Government of The Gambia through the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, led by Minister Nani Juwara. The award grants Eni rights to carry out exploration activities and resource appraisal in a maritime area considered to have high geological potential.

Location and potential of the offshore Block A1 in The Gambia

Block A1 covers approximately 1,300 square kilometers and is located in deep waters, with depths ranging from 1,250 to 3,300 meters.

According to information released by the company, the area lies within a region of the Atlantic margin where hydrocarbon discoveries have already been confirmed. This feature increases the asset’s attractiveness and strengthens expectations for future oil exploration activities.

The block’s strategic location also places it within one of the most dynamic areas for the energy industry in West Africa, where several international companies continue to expand their offshore exploration programs.

Eni focuses on a diversified exploration portfolio

The addition of this asset aligns with Eni’s global exploration strategy, aimed at building a geographically diversified and balanced portfolio.

The company seeks to combine opportunities in areas with already proven petroleum systems with new emerging regions that offer favorable prospects for discovering energy resources. Likewise, the strategy includes participation in frontier areas that offer high long-term exploration potential.

Founded in 1953 and converted into a public limited company in 1992, Eni has established itself as one of Europe’s leading energy companies, with operations in multiple oil and gas producing regions around the world.

Boost for The Gambia’s energy sector

Eni’s arrival represents a new step in the development of The Gambia’s energy sector. The inclusion of a company with extensive experience in offshore projects can help increase geological knowledge of the basin and attract future international investment.

In addition, the award of Block A1 reinforces the industry’s interest in West Africa, a region that continues to gain prominence thanks to its energy resources and recent discoveries made in various countries along the Atlantic coast.

With this agreement, Eni adds a new asset to its African portfolio and strengthens its positioning in an area considered strategic for the next stages of growth in offshore exploration.
