Eni, KazMunayGas and Plenitude achieved a new technological milestone in Kazakhstan’s energy transition by starting the first industrial power generation from the 120-megawatt (MW) gas power plant, one of the main components of the Mangystau hybrid project, which will have a total capacity of 247 MW.
The commissioning of this unit represents a decisive step toward the start-up of the country’s first large-scale hybrid power plant, designed to integrate generation from natural gas, solar energy and, at a later stage, wind energy, with the aim of supplying reliable electricity to KazMunayGas operations in the Mangystau region.
A project that combines reliability and decarbonization
The Mangystau development is being carried out in stages. The first was the commissioning of a 50 MW solar plant in September 2025. With the initial start-up of the gas power plant, the project now incorporates the flexible generation capacity needed to ensure a continuous electricity supply.
The next phase envisages final commercial operation of the gas plant in the third quarter of 2026, while the 77 MW wind farm will begin operating in 2027, thus completing the hybrid configuration planned for the energy complex.
According to Eni, this combination of technologies will strengthen the regional power infrastructure while contributing to national goals to modernize and diversify the energy mix.
More than two million work hours without lost-time accidents
During construction of the project, more than two million man-hours were worked without lost-time accidents, an indicator that reflects coordination among construction teams, contractors and local authorities.
The company noted that this result made it possible to develop highly complex energy infrastructure within the planned timelines and under strict industrial safety standards.
Eni expands its presence in Kazakhstan’s energy transition
Eni has maintained operations in Kazakhstan since 1992 through hydrocarbon exploration and production activities, in addition to participating in major projects such as Karachaganak, the North Caspian PSA, the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) and the BTC pipeline.
As part of its decarbonization strategy, the company has also expanded its presence in renewable energy through Plenitude, which currently operates 96 MW of wind capacity and a 50 MW solar plant in the country.
