La TNPA opened a tender to develop and operate for 25 years a floating dry dock intended for the repair of ships. The Transnet National Port Authority (TNPA) is looking for a private operator to develop a new floating dry dock in Cape Town Harbour, an infrastructure intended to expand local ship repair and maintenance capacity.
The call for proposals is made through a request for proposals (RFP) that includes a 25-year concession. Under this arrangement, the selected operator will be responsible for the design, financing, construction, operation, and maintenance of the facility. They will also be responsible for its dismantling at the end of the established period.
Increased demand for ship repairs in Cape Town
According to the TNPA, the project responds to the growing demand for ship repair services associated with the increase in maritime traffic along the Cape shipping route.
This movement of vessels is increasing the need for infrastructure capable of handling naval maintenance and repair work. Therefore, the new dry dock will increase the available capacity at the Port of Cape Town and expand the services offered to maritime operators.
Once operational, the floating dry dock will be able to receive vessels for various technical interventions, these will include hull maintenance, machinery and equipment overhauls, and steel structure inspections.
In addition, the facility will allow for the development of repairs and specialized maintenance services, strengthening the infrastructure available to serve ships transiting through this maritime zone.
TNPA is committed to expanding maritime repair capacity
The project also aims to strengthen Cape Town’s image within the marine repair market, the combination of port infrastructure and increased maintenance capacity could allow the port to meet a growing share of the demand linked to vessel traffic.
This concession project represents an opportunity not only to increase capacity, but also to improve our service offering to customers and consolidate Cape Town’s position as a competitive marine repair hub.

The involvement of a private operator will allow the asset to be developed through a long-term concession model, while the TNPA keeps the project integrated within the port activity of Cape Town.
Tender for floating dry dock sets its next dates
Furthermore, potential bidders will have a non-mandatory information session next September 3 this meeting will allow interested companies to learn about the proposal and the development of the concession. Afterwards, participants will have until date missing. December 14 to submit their bids.
With this process, the TNPA is moving towards incorporating new infrastructure for Ship repair in the Port of Cape Town, in a context marked by increased maritime traffic around the Cape route.
