Cadeler announced the completion of the installation of the 100 turbines at the Sofia wind farm, a 1.4 GW project developed by RWE in the British North Sea. With the placement of turbine number 100, the company concludes one of the most significant offshore installation campaigns currently underway in Europe.

In addition, this project represents the first installation campaign completed by the Wind Peak vessel since joining Cadeler’s fleet, consolidating its capability to participate in large-scale offshore wind developments.

The Sofia wind farm ranks among the largest in the world

Located off the northeast coast of the United Kingdom, the Sofia offshore wind farm stands out as one of the largest single offshore projects globally. The installation includes 100 Siemens Gamesa SG 14-222 turbines, designed to maximize energy production in marine environments.

Cadeler was responsible for the transport and full installation of the wind turbines, an operation that required complex logistical coordination due to the size of the components and the operating conditions typical of the North Sea.

According to Mikkel Gleerup, CEO of Cadeler, the completion of this phase represents an important step forward for both the project and the company.

The completion of turbine installation at Sofia represents a major milestone for the project and the first offshore wind installation campaign completed by Wind Peak.

The executive pointed out.

Wind Peak completes its first commercial campaign

The installation was carried out by the Wind Peak, the first of the P-class vessels developed by Cadeler to meet the requirements of the new generation of offshore wind farms.

Delivered in August 2024, the vessel was designed to handle increasingly larger and heavier components. Key features include one of the highest lifting capacities in the sector and a deck optimized for transporting large turbines.

After beginning operations from the port of Hull in March 2025, Wind Peak continuously completed the installation of the 100 wind turbines planned for the Sofia project.

A significant contribution to the United Kingdom’s renewable generation

Once fully operational, the Sofia offshore wind farm will have the capacity to supply electricity to around 1.2 million British households for a full year.

Likewise, the project strengthens the United Kingdom’s strategy to expand its renewable generation capacity and reduce dependence on energy sources with higher carbon emissions.

The completion of this stage brings Sofia closer to full operation and confirms the growth trend of high-capacity offshore wind developments currently being built in Europe.
