Dolphin Drilling announced the extension of the contract for the semi-submersible rig Blackford Dolphin with Oil India Limited, allowing deepwater operations east of India to continue until at least August 28, 2026.
The extension will make it possible to conclude the drilling, testing and abandonment activities planned for the campaign, maintaining the same contractual terms and the technical scope originally agreed between both companies.
The rig will continue supporting offshore operations while the final stages of the program are completed before the unit’s demobilization is concluded.
Drilling represents one stage in a well’s life cycle
In drilling engineering, reaching the target depth does not mean the work is finished. Once drilling is completed, the well must go through a series of technical activities aimed at verifying its performance, assessing the reservoir’s potential, and ensuring the infrastructure can continue operating safely.
These stages include production testing, data acquisition, integrity verification, well conditioning and, where applicable, temporary or permanent abandonment procedures in accordance with industry standards.
The contract extension will allow these activities to be completed before the rig is demobilized.
Dolphin Drilling: A rig is a comprehensive offshore operations hub
Although it is commonly associated with drilling the well, a semi-submersible rig performs much broader functions during an offshore campaign.
In addition to providing the systems needed to drill, it provides lifting capacity, fluid circulation, pressure control, support for testing, intervention operations, and assistance during well abandonment work.
This integration makes the rig an essential operational asset throughout all phases of executing a drilling campaign.
Planning must adapt to the project’s technical evolution
Deepwater drilling campaigns take place under geological and operational conditions that may vary from the initial plan.
The duration of certain activities depends on factors such as reservoir response, results obtained during testing, well conditions, and the verifications required to ensure its integrity.
In this context, contract extensions are a common tool to ensure that all planned operations are completed with the required levels of safety and quality, before releasing the drilling unit for new projects.
Operational reliability is a priority offshore
Deepwater drilling operations require precise coordination among operators, contractors, and specialized service providers.
Completing each stage of the technical program helps reduce operational risks, preserve asset integrity, and optimize the performance of campaigns that are often carried out in highly complex environments.
The continued collaboration between Dolphin Drilling and Oil India reflects the importance of maintaining consistent operating standards throughout the entire well execution cycle.
