Aramco and Emerson promote industrial corrosion monitoring

The solution they are developing virtually eliminates manual corrosion inspections.
corrosion management by companies

Aramco and Emerson signed a collaboration agreement to develop next-generation corrosion management solutions, aimed at digitizing the inspection of industrial assets and improving decision-making in demanding energy operations.

The initiative combines Saudi Aramco’s operational expertise and intellectual property with Emerson’s technology platform in automation, ultrasonic sensors, wireless connectivity, and real-time data analytics. The goal is to create a solution tailored to Aramco’s processes, capable of continuously monitoring wall thickness and anticipating conditions that could affect equipment integrity.

Sensors for more predictive corrosion management

Corrosion remains one of the most critical challenges to the reliability of oil, petrochemical, and energy facilities. Therefore, the use of advanced sensors allows for a shift from periodic manual measurements to a continuous, digital, and data-driven model.

Furthermore, online industrial corrosion monitoring reduces personnel exposure to complex or hazardous tasks, especially on hard-to-reach assets. With a reliable flow of information, operations and maintenance teams can assess trends, detect variations, and prioritize interventions before major failures occur.

Real-time data to reduce unplanned downtime

According to Emerson’s press release, its advanced monitoring platform delivers real-time information to help prevent unplanned downtime and increase production efficiency. This capability is especially relevant in processes where thickness loss, material degradation, or localized corrosion can compromise operational continuity.

Similarly, wireless connectivity for wall thickness monitors facilitates continuous data collection without relying on isolated manual inspections. By integrating these measurements with digital analytics, companies can strengthen their predictive maintenance programs and optimize mechanical integrity management.

The alliance focuses on research and development applied to Aramco’s specific needs. Emerson will contribute online ultrasonic monitoring technology, integrated automation, and continuous analysis capabilities, while Aramco will contribute field knowledge of energy processes, industrial assets, and real-world operating conditions.

According to Ram Krishnan, Emerson’s chief operating officer, the company is positioned to co-innovate cost-effective, scalable, and customized corrosion monitoring solutions for Aramco. He also noted that the tool could be valuable for other industries facing similar integrity, reliability, and safety challenges.
