American Carbon Company extends the life of pipelines with graphite

Pipelines more than 20 years old can extend their service life thanks to cathodic protection with graphite.

During his participation in the AMPP conference in Panama Matt Seeboth, president of American Carbon Company (ACC), shared key details on how his company is revolutionizing critical infrastructure protection through the use of graphite and complementary technologies.

Cathodic protection as the basis for ACC innovation

Graphite is the starting point for ACC. Its inert nature makes it an ideal material for use as an anode in cathodic protection systems, mitigating corrosion in underground and subway and subsea pipelines. Seeboth explained that although the company began as a manufacturer of graphite anodes, evolving industry needs led it to incorporate other technologies, such as mixed metal oxide and high silicon cast iron anodes, which offer greater durability and flexibility depending on the application.

ACC focuses on products and extending the life of existing infrastructure, a strategy that reduces the need for new construction, with a clear impact on sustainability. Seeboth emphasized that many pipelines in operation have already exceeded their design life of 20 years and, thanks to advanced cathodic protection it is possible to extend their safe and efficient operation.

Another of ACC’s pillars is its global and adaptable approach: with headquarters in Wisconsin and manufacturing partners in China and India, the company ensures responsiveness in delivery times and product customization to meet the needs of a demanding international market. And finally, Seeboth emphasized that ACC’s entire production process is designed under efficiency and recycling criteria, minimizing waste and focusing on sustainability.
