Amazon and Skyborn Renewables signed a 600 MW power purchase agreement linked to the offshore wind farm Gennaker, located in the German Baltic Sea. The agreement becomes the largest individual PPA signed in Germany and reinforces the development of new offshore wind capacity in the country.
Gennaker Will Contribute Up to 976.5 MW of Offshore Capacity
The Gennaker offshore wind farm will have a total capacity of up to 976.5 MW and will be located approximately 15 kilometers north of the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
The project includes the installation of 63 offshore wind turbines of 15 MW each. Once operational, it is expected to generate sufficient carbon-free electricity to supply more than one million German households annually.
Furthermore, the PPA signed by Amazon covers approximately 61% of the park’s total capacity, providing commercial stability to the project and financial backing to advance toward its construction phase.
An Essential Contract for German Offshore Wind
Construction of Gennaker is planned following Skyborn’s financial close in summer 2026, while its entry into operation is estimated for late 2028.
Additionally, the project will contribute to Germany’s goal of reaching 30 GW of installed offshore wind capacity by 2030. Its location in the Baltic also strengthens the diversification of national renewable generation and the country’s energy security.
Regional Impact and Industrial Investment
Gennaker represents an investment of approximately 3 billion euros in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. A significant portion of the supply chain will be linked to the region, including the manufacturing of monopile foundations by EEW Special Pipe Constructions in Rostock.
This industrial component adds local value to the project by supporting specialized employment and consolidating technical capabilities in offshore manufacturing.
Amazon Expands Its Carbon-Free Energy Portfolio
With this agreement, Amazon strengthens its position as a corporate buyer of carbon-free energy in Europe. In Germany, its portfolio totals 12 projects with more than 1.3 GW of capacity.
The company frames this PPA within its climate strategy and its goal of achieving carbon neutrality in its operations by 2040.
Skyborn Advances with a Strategic Offshore Project
For Skyborn Renewables, the agreement with Amazon provides long-term revenue certainty and enables progress on a large-scale offshore wind project.
The company, headquartered in Germany, has been developing Gennaker from early stages and has experience in development, financing, construction, and offshore asset management.
