Waymo , a specialist in autonomous driving technologies, has announced an agreement with Nihon Kotsu, the largest taxi company in Tokyo, to deploy its autonomous electric vehicles in the Japanese capital, starting in 2025.
The strategic alliance between Waymo and Nihon Kotsu
Nihon Kotsu will be responsible for the initial maintenance and operation of the Waymo vehicles. The rollout will begin with manual mapping in major districts of the capital, such as Minato, Shinjuku and Shibuya, establishing a foundation for the Waymo Driver to learn the intricacies of Japanese traffic, including the left-hand driving style.
The project is being carried out in close cooperation with Japan’s national and metropolitan governments. Waymo will work with local authorities to ensure that the introduction of the technology is safe and beneficial to the community.
The deployment in Tokyo strengthens Waymo’s position as a leader in autonomous vehicles, and provides an opportunity to validate its technology in the global urban environment. Additionally, the data collected will accelerate the development of the Waymo Driver, allowing it to be adapted to new locations through advanced simulations.
With this project, Waymo and Nihon Kotsu demonstrate how artificial intelligence can be responsibly integrated into traditional transportation systems, offering efficient solutions to new urban mobility challenges.
