Van Oord has marked a milestone in the maritime industry with the VO:X Barentsz, the first unmanned vessel authorised to sail under the Dutch flag. This development underlines the progress in the regulation and operation of autonomous vessels in the Netherlands.

The VO:X Barentsz has received official certification to fly the flag of the Netherlands, a key step towards the integration of these vessels into the maritime regulatory framework. This recognition is the result of joint work between Van Oord and the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management to adapt legislation to the reality of autonomous navigation.

Innovative design of the unmanned vessel

This autonomous vessel , with a length of 7 metres, has been developed to operate in challenging conditions. Its design makes it compatible with dredging projects, offshore wind energy and maritime infrastructure, allowing for more efficient and accurate data collection.

One of the greatest benefits of the VO:X Barentsz is its impact on maritime safety and sustainability. By not requiring a crew on board, it reduces occupational risks and the carbon footprint of operations. Its ability to collect detailed data without human intervention sets a new standard for the industry.

With this achievement, Van Oord reinforces its leadership in maritime technology and demonstrates the potential of autonomous vessels in optimising naval operations. As regulations evolve, further adoption of these technologies in the sector is expected.
