Van Oord continues its path towards sustainability with the modernisation of the cable vessel Nexus , which has been equipped with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. This initiative, carried out in collaboration with Damen Shipyards Group, reinforces the company’s commitment to energy efficiency and compliance with International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Tier III regulations.
Integration of SCR technology in the cable ship
The installation of five SCR units on Nexus marks a significant step forward in Van Oord’s emissions reduction strategy. Using urea as a reagent to chemically remove NOx from exhaust gases, this system is one of the most effective solutions for pollutant mitigation in the maritime industry.
The Nexus, which has been in operation for over a decade, has been retrofitted with a compact solution designed by Damen Shipyards, allowing for efficient integration without compromising the vessel’s operational space.
Commitment to sustainability
Van Oord has reaffirmed its commitment to achieving net zero emissions in its operations by modernizing its fleet with clean technologies. The implementation of the SCR system on the Nexus is a strategic step within a broader plan to optimize energy efficiency and minimize the carbon footprint of maritime transport .
The reduction of NOx on ships meets the strictest environmental standards and also improves air quality and reduces the impact on marine ecosystems , aligning with global sustainability policies in the naval sector.
Impact on the maritime industry
The shipping industry faces a growing challenge to reduce polluting emissions, and technologies such as SCR represent an effective solution to comply with increasingly stringent regulations . Companies such as Van Oord are leading the change with investments in innovation and modernisation of their fleet, positioning themselves as leaders in the transition towards greener maritime transport.
With these types of initiatives, Van Oord optimizes its operations and sets a precedent for the maritime industry, incentivizing the use of emission-reducing technologies and promoting sustainability on a global level.
