Following the successful completion of a refit at the Kiewit shipyard in Corpus Christi, Texas, the Valaris 144 jack-up rig has begun its journey to Angola to execute a new drilling contract in Angola. The operation marks a milestone in the mobilization of offshore drilling equipment and reinforces Valaris’ presence in the African hydrocarbon market, consolidating its role in Angolan drilling.

A strategic move for drilling in Angola

The Valaris 144, a LeTourneau Technologies EXL (Super 116E) class rig, is currently en route after being loaded onto a heavy lift vessel . According to Bud Baylis, Rig Manager at Valaris, the mobilization was made possible by the joint efforts of the engineering and logistics teams. “ Thank you all for your hard work and dedication to achieving this goal ,” said Baylis.

This move is part of an expansion strategy by Valaris, whose offshore drilling portfolio continues to grow with projects in different regions of the world. Angola, with vast hydrocarbon reserves on its continental shelf, represents a key opportunity for the company.

Technical capabilities of the Valaris 144

The Valaris 144 is a self-elevating platform designed to operate in challenging environments. Its main specifications include:

  • Maximum drilling depth: 35,000 ft.
  • Well Control Systems: Equipped with Cameron TL type 15,000 psi BOP.
  • Accommodation capacity: Up to 120 people.
  • Safety infrastructure: Advanced gas detection system and emergency evacuation equipment.
  • Helipad: Compatible with Sikorsky S-61N and S-92 helicopters.

These features allow it to operate efficiently in the offshore market, where reliability and security are key aspects.

A key market for hydrocarbon exploration

Angola has emerged as a strategic hub for offshore drilling, with international companies investing in its energy sector . The arrival of the Valaris 144 underlines the industry’s confidence in the viability of oil projects in the region.

The platform is expected to begin operations in the coming weeks, with a focus on maximising production and ensuring high environmental and operational safety standards. The oil and gas industry continues to closely monitor this development, which could influence future drilling assignments in the South Atlantic.

With this move, Valaris reinforces its commitment to safe and efficient drilling in key markets such as Africa, consolidating its role as a relevant player in deepwater hydrocarbon exploration.
