TotalEnergies and Air Liquide join forces to decarbonise their refineries with green hydrogen

TotalEnergies and Air Liquide will seek to produce up to 30,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year.
Empresas se unen para descarbonizar refinerías

TotalEnergies and Air Liquide have joined forces to take a crucial step in their commitment to the decarbonisation of European industry. Through two major projects in the Netherlands, both companies aim to produce 45,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year from renewable energy, specifically from a state-of-the-art offshore wind farm, the OranjeWind.

This agreement aims to reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 450,000 tonnes per year at TotalEnergies’ refineries in Belgium and the Netherlands, aligning with Europe’s ambitious sustainability goals.

TotalEnergies and Air Liquide aim to decarbonise refineries

In a joint effort, TotalEnergies and Air Liquide will create a joint venture that will build a 250 MW electrolyser near the Zeeland refinery. This project, which is expected to come online in 2029, will make it possible to produce up to 30,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year , which will significantly contribute to reducing the plant’s CO2 emissions by up to 300,000 tonnes per year. This investment, which exceeds €600 million, is expected to be key to the success of the energy transition.

In addition, a second project, led by Air Liquide, will be developed in Maasvlakte, with a 200 MW electrolyser that will supply the TotalEnergies platform in Antwerp. This project, called ELYgator, is scheduled to begin operations at the end of 2027 and will reduce the Antwerp plant’s CO2 emissions by up to 150,000 tonnes per year.

Reducing emissions with green hydrogen

TotalEnergies will be responsible for supplying renewable electricity from the OranjeWind project for the production of green hydrogen, a strategic step to strengthen its position as an integrated energy company.

Vincent Stoquart, President of Refining & Chemicals at TotalEnergies, highlighted that this collaboration marks a significant step towards the decarbonisation of hydrogen consumed by its refineries in Europe and also reinforces TotalEnergies’ role as a key player in the transition towards cleaner and more sustainable energy.
