This project began with just two test units in 2021 and has now established itself as one of the most important urban electric mobility initiatives in the country.

Through partnerships with local and international entities, GABS has installed a pioneering charging infrastructure: 30 dual-dispenser charging stations , the largest of their kind in the country. Furthermore, this network is expected to double by 2025, reaching 60 chargers with 120 dispensers.

In 1896, we drove South Africa’s first electric tram, and now, 129 years later, we’re the first city bus company to introduce electric buses on a mass scale.

Francois Meyer, Managing Director of Golden Arrow Bus Services.

The electric buses have been well received by users and communities along their routes. Surveys conducted in passenger forums reflect a high level of satisfaction, highlighting the comfort, quietness, and efficiency of the new system.

As a cornerstone of Cape Town’s public transport system, Golden Arrow is leading the way in reducing greenhouse gas emissions with the introduction of these electric buses into its fleet.

In the public transportation sector, the shift to electric vehicles is critical to achieving sustainable mobility for commuters and creating economic opportunities and employment in various sectors of the province.

Isaac Sileku, Minister of Mobility of the Western Cape.
