BW ESS has built and commissioned a 100MW/331MWh battery energy storage system ( BESS ) in Bramley, Hampshire, establishing itself as the largest in operation in the UK.
The UK’s largest battery storage system
The official opening was chaired by Andreas Sohmen-Pao, Chairman of BW Group , at a ceremony attended by representatives of the energy industry, including executives from Sungrow and Shell Energy Europe Limited . Also in attendance was the Honourable Lord James Arbuthnot of Edrom, Co-Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Power Networks .
The Bramley BESS project is the first project in Europe to integrate Sungrow ’s PowerTitan 2.0 liquid cooling technology , making it one of the most efficient and long-lasting storage solutions on the market. Its capabilities also enable it to supply the daily electricity needs of approximately 44,000 British homes, contributing to the reduction of emissions and energy costs.
Last year, BW ESS signed a seven-year supply contract with Shell Energy Europe Limited , a pioneering agreement in the European battery storage market. Rupen Tanna, Director of Energy at Shell Energy Europe, stressed that this business model sets a precedent in the industry.
Bramley is a ground-breaking and pioneering project aligned with our mission to unlock the value of energy storage. I am grateful that so many of our colleagues and partners were able to join us to celebrate the occasion.
Erik Strømsø, CEO of BW ESS.
This reflects the dedication and experience of the project team, as well as the strong collaboration with local communities and authorities, whose commitment has been invaluable throughout the development of the project.

Shawn Shi, President of Sungrow Europe, underlined the impact of Bramley’s BESS on grid stability and its contribution to a more sustainable energy system. “ With PowerTitan 2.0, we are setting new standards in efficiency, safety and scalability for the UK and beyond ,” he said.
