Technology company Ameresco and environmental services company Republic Services announced the opening of their new renewable natural gas ( RNG ) plant at the Roxana Landfill in Edwardsville, Illinois. The plant is in commercial operation and has an annual production capacity of 1.4 million dekatherms, making it one of the largest facilities in North America.
The renewable natural gas plant
The new facility aims to capture landfill-generated biogas, then move on to the next step of converting it into renewable natural gas. With the ability to process up to 6,000 standard cubic feet per minute ( SCFM ) of landfill gas, the facility is looking to create a more sustainable energy grid.
This project is a clean, direct alternative to fossil fuels, reducing a large amount of unused biogas , a polluting waste that was previously burned. By transforming biogas into renewable gas, the Roxana plant supports the state of Illinois’ goal of reaching 40% renewable energy by 2030 and 100% clean energy by 2050.
With an estimated reduction of more than 82,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide each year, this project has an impact in the fight against climate change. This figure is comparable to the amount of annual emissions from approximately 5,000 passenger vehicles or the energy consumption of about 2,500 homes. In this way, both companies are betting on sustainability, and on the creation of a circular economy, by converting waste into a clean and accessible source of energy.
This plant is the first joint facility that the two companies have developed to produce renewable energy, and its success is part of a series of initiatives aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
“Today’s announcement marks a momentous moment in our partnership,” said Michael Bakas, president of Renewable Fuels for Ameresco. “ This project is part of a broader movement toward the circular economy, which turns waste into valuable, sustainable resources that benefit both the environment and local communities .”
Republic Services has also reaffirmed its commitment to long-term sustainability. Tim Oudman, senior vice president of Sustainability Innovation, said the company aims to beneficially reuse 50% more biogas at its facilities by 2030.
This renewable natural gas project is just one of many efforts Ameresco and Republic Services are undertaking to reduce carbon emissions and promote clean energy. With 14 renewable energy projects completed and another 8 in various stages of development,
