The Norwegian shipyard Ulstein Verft carried out maintenance and modernization work directly onboard Hurtigruten’s Trollfjord vessel.

Ulstein Verft recently performed an after-sales service operation onboard the Trollfjord vessel, belonging to the Hurtigruten company, while the vessel was in Bergen, Norway.

The project was executed by the shipyard’s after-sales service team, led by Hans Ole Låbakk, regional after-sales manager, who coordinated the necessary tasks after being contacted by the client due to issues related to an exhaust gas boiler.

Ulstein Performed Off-Shipyard Repairs

According to the company, after more than 20 years of operation, the boiler required a complete overhaul, including the replacement of vibration dampers and tie rods.

Although the project had to be carried out outside the shipyard’s facilities and without access to its own quay or pier, Ulstein decided to quickly mobilize a specialized team to execute the work directly at the client’s location.

“The client contacted us with a problem related to an exhaust gas boiler. Although we did not have a quay or pier available, our response was simple: ‘We will fix it’,” stated Hans Ole Låbakk.

The team boarded the vessel in Torvik, near Ulstein Verft, transporting prefabricated components and pre-prepared tools to expedite the intervention.

Four Intensive Days of Work Onboard the Trollfjord

Once the vessel arrived in Bergen and passengers disembarked, technical work began, extending for four consecutive days.

Specialists lived and worked onboard throughout the operation, allowing for continuous execution and close coordination with the client.

The scope of work included:

  • Disassembly and reinstallation of exhaust pipes.
  • Replacement of the boiler’s top cover.
  • Alignment and adjustment work.
  • Installation of new vibration dampers and tie rods.
  • Welding of reinforcements and structural adaptations.

Ulstein highlighted that all activities were carried out under strict safety protocols and operational planning.

After-Sales Services Beyond the Shipyard

The company noted that this project reflects the capability of its after-sales services to operate directly at the client’s facilities, expanding the possibilities for maintenance and technical support outside the main shipyard.

“This project demonstrates what we can achieve when we combine solid expertise, meticulous planning, and flexibility,” Låbakk indicated.

The executive added that this type of operation opens new opportunities for Ulstein’s after-sales services, especially in maintenance and modernization work carried out in ports or remote locations.

Ulstein Verft is part of the Norwegian Ulstein group and specializes in shipbuilding, modernization, and maritime services for the offshore, energy, and shipping sectors.
