PJM is reviewing new large electrical loads at a time when the electricity demand it is growing strongly, driven mainly by the expansion of data centers.
PJM Interconnection it began its annual review of adjustments proposed by large electricity consumers to update its long-term load forecast for 2027. This time, the operator is applying new guidelines with the aim of more accurately assessing how likely it is that the projects under consideration will actually be developed.
The process is especially important due to the anticipated increase in electricity demand in the regions served by PJM. Data centers are expected to be the main driver of this growth, along with other users that require large volumes of energy.
Data centers promote the growth of electricity demand
One of the main objectives of PJM the goal is to determine which new major loads should be incorporated into their long-term forecasts. To do this, the operator will compare announced projects with their actual probability of completion before adding them to electricity consumption estimates.
The review comes at a time when data centers are playing an increasingly important role in demand projections. PJM indicated that these types of facilities account for the majority of the adjustments submitted, although there are other customers with high energy requirements as well.
With this information, the operator will analyze the proposals along with other available data on the expected growth of electricity consumption in its territory.
Around 12 electricity companies submit proposals to PJM
Around 12 electric utilities submitted their proposals to the PJM Load Analysis Subcommittee, these included Dominion Energy, NOVEC, FirstEnergy, and Duke.
The applications are mainly related to projects in data centers although they may also include other large electricity consumers. PJM will evaluate this information as part of the process to establish the final load adjustment.
The new guidelines seek to improve how these projects are incorporated into forecasts, so that planning can take into account that some of the large announced loads could be delayed or ultimately not come into operation.
Charles River Associates will analyze the demand for data centers
As part of this process, PJM hired the independent consulting firm Charles River Associates to analyze demand trends related to data centers and the factors that could influence their growth over the next few years.
The firm plans to present its conclusions in October, the study will offer additional information to estimate how the electricity consumption of these facilities could evolve within the territory managed by PJM.
Later, in November, the operator will explain how it will incorporate the collected data into the final load adjustment of its long-term forecast for 2027.
Finally, PJM plans to publish the new forecast in January, the document will include the results of the review of large loads and an updated outlook on the growth of electricity demand.
