Transition Industries, through its Pacifico Mexinol project, has symbolically started the construction of the methanol mega-plant in Topolobampo, Sinaloa, Mexico, with the laying of the first stone. This plant will be special because it will produce low carbon methanol, also called “blue methanol” or “ultra-low emissions”.
Project data
Methanol is a chemical used to make plastics, fuels, solvents and many other industrial products, and normally, its production is very polluting. But this plant will use clean technology, treated wastewater and greener energy. greener energy to almost completely reduce its carbon footprint.
The plant is expected to produce about 1.8 million metric tons of blue methanol. blue methanol per year along with 350,000 metric tons of ultra-low emission methanol. In addition, the project contemplates an investment of more than $3.3 billion and the generation of more than 6,000 jobs during construction and at least 450 permanent jobs.
Who participates in the project?
The methanol mega-plant has the participation of the Mexican and US governments, as well as international companies from Korea, Italy, Germany, Japan, France and other entities such as development banks and organizations such as the World Bank (through the IFC).
Other companies such as Samsung E&A, Techint, Siemens Energy, Emerson, among others, will be involved in the construction and operation.
Future projection of the Pacífico Mexinol project
Engineering work will begin in the short term, with construction scheduled to start by the end of 2026. Commissioning is estimated between 2029 and 2030.
With this development, the Pacífico Mexinol project is emerging as a global benchmark in the production of sustainable chemicals and in the evolution of the energy industry.
