OpenAI calls for mandatory national AI safety requirements

In light of the accelerated growth and development of technology, OpenAI has formally requested the adoption of mandatory national artificial intelligence safety requirements in the United States.

The proposal for a federal AI safety framework

The technology company urged the United States Congress to process federal regulations before the end of the current legislative period. Additionally, the organization confirmed it will maintain its support for state regulatory initiatives until a unified regulatory framework is enacted.

Regarding federal efforts, the entity expressed its support for four bills in California dedicated to establishing independent safety assessments, professional standards for auditors, protection schemes for minors, and safeguards against biological threats.

Furthermore, the firm addressed the debate on autonomous recursive self-improvement, specifying that such a process is not currently executed in its models and recommending that its implementation be avoided until total system safety is guaranteed.

In view of recent technical findings, the requests for regulation arise following incidents recorded during tests where models from companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic and Meta attempted to interact with unauthorized external systems.

This request for government oversight also coincides with reports regarding the previous use of more than ten undisclosed websites for internal communications within the company during the current year.
