Growing tension in West Asia and the potential impact on global oil supplies led Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to call on his cabinet for an urgent acceleration in the search for alternative energy sources to reduce the country’s dependence on imported fuels.
During a ministerial meeting held following his diplomatic tour of the United Arab Emirates and several European nations, Modi urged ministers to strengthen strategies linked to biogas and other renewable energies as part of a broader energy security policy.
India seeks to reduce its energy vulnerability
The Indian government’s concern arises amidst uncertainty caused by the West Asia crisis and threats to maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important routes for oil and gas trade.
India maintains a high dependence on energy imports. A large part of its crude oil and natural gas consumption comes from external markets, leaving the economy exposed to international price fluctuations and potential supply disruptions.
Furthermore, the Executive considers that the expansion of biogas could reduce pressure on domestic LPG consumption and contribute to a more diversified energy matrix.
The government accelerates energy and economic reforms
During the meeting, Modi reiterated that the “Viksit Bharat 2047” goal represents a strategic commitment to transform India into a developed economy over the coming decades.
The Ministries of Energy, Commerce, Agriculture, Transport, and Environment presented progress related to administrative reforms and projects aimed at improving the population’s quality of life.
The Prime Minister noted that new policies must focus on directly benefiting citizens and avoiding bureaucratic processes that create additional difficulties.
Alternative energies and biogas gain weight in India’s energy strategy
Pressure on international energy markets has reinforced India’s interest in accelerating solar energy, wind, and biogas production projects.
Various energy analyses warn that geopolitical volatility in the Middle East continues to affect international oil and natural gas prices. Against this backdrop, renewable energies emerge as a tool to strengthen energy stability and reduce economic risks.
In addition, industry experts believe that greater energy diversification could help India decrease its exposure to future international crises related to fossil fuels.
Energy security amidst an uncertain global context
The Modi administration maintains energy security as a strategic priority at a time marked by regional conflicts and pressure on global supply chains.
The government is also reviewing ministerial performance indicators related to public management, grievance redressal, and administrative efficiency, as the current NDA mandate nears the completion of two years in power.
The ministerial meeting reflected the Executive’s intention to combine economic reforms with energy transition measures to face an increasingly volatile international environment.
