Lantern LNG has selected Honeywell Process and Automation Technologies as its integrated technology provider for its future liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility in Matagorda Bay, Texas. The decision reinforces the project’s focus on operational efficiency and digital integration across the LNG value chain.
A technological alliance to optimize gas liquefaction
The company plans to implement Honeywell’s full portfolio of solutions, ranging from natural gas pretreatment to advanced liquefaction systems and coiled heat exchangers. Automation tools and digital platforms will also be incorporated to enable real-time monitoring and control.
This comprehensive approach facilitates unified project management, improving productivity and reducing operational complexity. Furthermore, integrating data across assets and processes enables more accurate, actionable decisions.
Production capacity and project development
The planned nearshore facility will have an approximate capacity of 12 million tons per year (MTPA), distributed across three trains of 4 MTPA each. This modular design aims to optimize costs and accelerate development.
According to current forecasts, the final investment decision for the first train could be reached in 2029, and subsequently, the start of commercial operation is estimated towards the end of 2031.
Impact on energy security and investment
From Lantern LNG’s perspective, having a single investment-grade technology provider brings greater certainty to the design and execution. This is crucial for strengthening investor confidence and ensuring the project’s financial viability.
Honeywell, for its part, emphasizes that its solutions reduce capital expenditures and risks associated with LNG projects. The company also underscores the role of these technologies in strengthening global energy security.
An expanding nearshore model
The project in Matagorda Bay responds to a growing trend towards nearshore LNG facilities, which combine advantages of structural stability with lower costs compared to floating solutions.
In this context, Lantern LNG seeks to position itself as a relevant player in the development of liquefied natural gas export infrastructure in the Gulf of Mexico, relying on high-level technological alliances.
