The company Iberdrola has ratified its financial commitment for the 2025–2028 period, allocating a total of 1.6 billion euros to research, development, and innovation (R&D+i). This resource allocation will be primarily aimed at accelerating electrification and optimizing the group’s operational efficiency. During the twelfth edition of the Digital Summit, held at the corporate campus in San Agustín del Guadalix, the information technology management team gathered industry specialists to analyze the convergence of technology and energy supply.
The investment and digitalization plan applied with artificial intelligence
Consequently, the industry meeting was held under the main theme ‘EnergIA que transforma‘ (Energy that transforms), a space designed to strengthen the internal digital culture and highlight strategic initiatives. The company’s CEO, Pedro Azagra, opened the sessions by explaining the corporate impact of artificial intelligence. In this way, the corporation promotes a transition toward an economic model structured on the basis of data-driven decisions.
Furthermore, the energy firm currently manages a portfolio of over 300 active projects based on machine learning algorithms and intelligent systems. These operational tools seek to increase productivity, strengthen cybersecurity, and improve the resilience of electrical distribution infrastructures. To this end, the multinational cooperates closely with global technology partners that include prominent corporations such as Microsoft, Google, IBM, ABB, Plain Concepts, Gestamp, and BYD.
Likewise, the innovation ecosystem is complemented by an experimental technical space where entities such as AWS, NTT Data, Capgemini, EY, Salesforce, SAP, Minsait, and Tecnalia showcase advanced robotics solutions. The integration of these technological systems follows a redesign of business processes that prioritizes talent development and quality in service to the end customer.
Finally, Iberdrola stands as the first organization in the global energy sector to obtain certification under the international ISO 42001 standard for the responsible management of artificial intelligence. This regulatory endorsement is complemented by recognition from the International Research Centre on Artificial Intelligence, an organization linked to UNESCO. Through the construction of corporate agentic platforms developed alongside cloud infrastructure partners, the company seeks to create tangible long-term value.
