GTT to design the first three-tank LNG carriers

Naval engineering adopts an optimized configuration that increases cargo capacity to 177,000 cubic meters and reduces pollutant emissions.

Technology engineering company GTT has been commissioned by HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) to design the containment systems for four new LNG carriers. This award, made on behalf of shipowner BW LNG, introduces, for the first time in the naval industry, a commercial configuration of three cargo tanks on large-scale vessels.

Consequently, the South Korean shipyard will integrate this optimized structure into four specific units:

  • Two of them correspond to orders placed in November 2025.
  • The remaining two were finalized in May 2026.

Delivery of the full fleet is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2028.

Space optimization and reduced boil-off losses

Replacing the traditional four-tank design with a three-section architecture makes it possible to extend tank length by up to 55%, so that total storage capacity increases by 3,000 cubic meters, reaching a net volume of 177,000 cubic meters without changing the vessel’s main dimensions or affecting compatibility with international terminals.

Indeed, reducing the insulation surface area relative to the transported volume directly improves overall thermal efficiency. This technical modification ensures a daily LNG boil-off rate limited to 0.08%. Likewise, the system uses GTT’s Mark III Flex membrane technology, a technical solution that ensures structural integrity at any cargo filling level.

Industry outlook and maritime sustainability

The companies involved stated that this innovation responds to demand for maritime transport with lower carbon emissions.

This project represents a major step forward in the evolution of LNG carrier design, with significant improvements in operational efficiency and environmental performance. It demonstrates GTT’s proactive approach in working closely with shipyards and shipowners to meet the changing needs of the LNG transport market.

François Michel, CEO of GTT.

In addition, spokespersons for BW LNG and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries emphasized that the technical cooperation strengthens operational flexibility in the global market.
