Equinor announced the initial delivery of LNG to Deepak Fertilisers and Petrochemicals Corporation Ltd. (DFPCL), a leading fertilizer and chemical producer in India. This transaction is part of a long-term supply agreement that strengthens the Norwegian company’s presence in Asian markets.

The cargo was shipped from the Hammerfest LNG plant, located in northern Norway, one of the key liquefied natural gas export facilities in Europe.

First LNG load: key to fertilizers

Natural gas plays a vital role in the production of ammonia, a key raw material for fertilizer manufacturing. This process directly impacts agricultural productivity and the stability of food systems.

In this context, ensuring a stable supply of LNG is crucial for countries with high agricultural demand such as India, where access to energy inputs influences crop yields.

Furthermore, the operation strengthens the link between the energy sector and food security. A steady flow of gas allows for sustained fertilizer production and improves the resilience of the agricultural sector to market fluctuations.

Likewise, the agreement between Equinor and DFPCL demonstrates the growing interdependence between energy exporters and developing economies.

Progress in trade between Norway and India

This delivery represents the first energy molecule shipped from Norway under the Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) between India and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), recently ratified.

This trade framework opens new opportunities for energy exchange and strengthens bilateral cooperation in strategic sectors.
