China took a firm step forward in its energy strategy by authorizing the construction of 10 nuclear reactors spread across five key projects, reaffirming its commitment to clean energy generation. clean and stable power generation. stable power generation. Among the approved initiatives are the advanced phases of the Fangchenggang, Haiyang, Sanmen, Taishan and Xiapu projects. Eight of the new reactors will use Hualong One technology, developed locally as a symbol of technological independence.
China expands its capacity with new nuclear reactors
The total approved investment exceeds US$27 billion (more than 200 billion yuan) and covers several coastal provinces, including Guangdong, Shandong and Fujian. China National Nuclear Power Corporation (CNNC) and China General Nuclear (CGN) are leading the implementation of the Hualong One units, which will have power outputs between 1200 and 1215 MWe. In addition, Haiyang will be joined by two CAP1000 reactorsreactors, derived from the AP1000 design from Westinghouse.
China currently operates 58 reactors with a combined capacity of 56.9 GW. Another 30 are under construction, with an additional 34.4 GW. The new reactors seek to increase this capacity as part of the country’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and ensure energy security.
Since 2022, the State Council has maintained a steady pace of approving at least 10 reactors per year. This reflects a structured long-term plan to consolidate China as a world leader in civil nuclear infrastructure.
